These pictures are of my new DHLG, one of two planes I have built for the upcoming 10th annual International HLG festival in San Diego. I will be flying a stock XP-3 aileron plane along with the new and yet un-nammed poly glider.
This killer poly ship was built with the help of many fine craftsman. The fuse plug was shaped by friend Kyle Krocker of Portland Oregon. Its similar to the Encore in shape but has sexier lines. The boom is a 2m Allegro carbon stick. (tailboom.com) The pod is 2 layers of kevlar with a dart of carbon for side support. Kyle also shaped and bagged the fin and stab from C grain contest balsa. I did the pylon design and fitted out all the tail feathers and push rods.
The radio gear is mounted on a molded carbon tray which is then mounted inside the pod.
Receiver is a trusty 555 without the case but firmly sealed and taped to the tray. A 350 nimh pack runs the power. I like long flight times so I like the bigger pack which is the same weight of a Nicad 150 mah pack. Servos are JR 241s. I really like these servos and both my planes have been changed over to 241s. The pushrods are .2 carbon and a small switch jack turns the power on and off.(from Shredair.com)
The gorgeous poly wing came from Denny Maize at Pole Cat Aero. Tracy Brown did the bagging job using kevlar skins and carbon spar caps. The foils are Mark Drelas A series designed for polyhedral plan forms.
Total weight is 9.75 oz. The first test flights were done recently and I have to say this is the stiffest HLG I have owned and the performance is outstanding with both turnability and fast cruise speeds. Marks airfoils do work. Its by far the best poly ship I have ever flown. More importantly, it looks stylish. And no, you cant go out and buy one. Some parts are available, but you will have to make your own fuselage. You can e-mail me with any questions.
